What Is Forward Head Posture?
Forward Head Posture is a postural pattern in which the head rests in front of the body's vertical alignment. The position changes how the neck, upper back, shoulders, and supporting muscles share load during sitting, standing, or movement. The head may appear to project forward, while the chin may tilt upward or downward.

How Forward Head Posture Works

Forward Head Posture describes the relationship between the head, neck, shoulders, and trunk during a posture assessment. A clinician observes whether the head sits ahead of the body's central line and checks how the position changes with sitting, standing, and movement. The assessment considers alignment together with muscle activity and available motion.
Related glossary terms: Cervical Spine, Cervical Lordosis, Thoracic Spine.
Forward Head Posture may appear as a consistent position or as a pattern that becomes more noticeable during desk work, device use, or fatigue. Cervical Spine position and Thoracic Spine position often receive attention because movement in one area can affect how another area is held. A postural correction plan may address body awareness, movement habits, and controlled strengthening.

From the Advanced Injury Care Clinic team
When we assess Forward Head Posture, we observe head and shoulder alignment during more than one position. We also consider neck movement, upper-back motion, and the habits that may reinforce the pattern. Our Postural Correction work uses these findings to guide exercises and movement practice.
Forward Head Posture in Practice: A Real-World Example
A person who spends much of the workday looking down at a laptop may hold the head ahead of the shoulders by afternoon. A Postural Correction session may examine the sitting position and practice a more controlled head and upper-back alignment.
