What Is a TENS Unit?

A TENS Unit is a small device that sends mild electrical pulses through adhesive pads placed on the skin. The pulses stimulate nearby sensory nerves and may change how the nervous system processes discomfort. TENS units are often used as part of care for neuropathy symptoms, muscle discomfort, or other pain conditions.

How TENS Unit Works

A man smiles while attaching a small device to a woman’s back with two adhesive pads in a bright room

A TENS Unit sends low-level electrical pulses through pads placed on the skin. The pulses reach nearby sensory nerves and may affect how discomfort signals are processed. You can adjust the pulse strength and pattern to match the treatment plan.

The device does not identify the cause of nerve symptoms. It also does not measure nerve function like a nerve conduction study. In neuropathy care, a TENS Unit may support comfort while the care team addresses movement, nerve health, and other parts of the treatment plan.

From the Advanced Injury Care Clinic team

When we use a TENS Unit for neuropathy care, we review the person’s symptoms and skin sensation first. We place the pads based on the treatment goal, then check comfort and response during use. Our team also records which settings provide useful symptom support.

TENS Unit in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with burning or tingling in the feet may use a TENS Unit as part of a neuropathy treatment plan. The care team places the pads in the planned area and adjusts the device based on comfort and response.
